We are a gathering of people looking for an opportunity to share in a friendly, informal way about sexuality and faith. The group meets on the second Sunday of the month from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.
Tuggeranong Uniting Church is an accepting and affirming space for LGBTIQ+ Christians to fully participate in all aspects of our church life including leadership and all forms of ministry. Although many LGBTIQ+ people have had uncomfortable, and sometimes even hostile, experiences with Christian churches in the past, many people of the LGBTIQ+ community in Australia identify as Christian. We aim to be a loving and welcoming place in Canberra where all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer or questioning people can meet, worship and enjoy fellowship together.
Our gatherings incorporate prayer, music and reflections on biblical texts and current topics. They also often include time for discussion and sharing of our personal experiences, both within the church and our life experiences in general.
The gathering begins with a shared meal at 6pm – feel free to bring a contribution if you are able. Coffee and other drinks are available. Our reflective and conversational space begins shortly after 6.30pm. We regularly have guest speakers who engage with the biblical texts and share their stories from a queer perspective.
All LGBTIQ+ people and others who seek to explore faith and biblical story in a safe and supportive environment are welcome.
The RCA also holds special services and events such as our recent quiet day. Members and friends of RCA gathered for a retreat day of meditation, mindfulness, and of course our usual food opportunity.
Delia Quigley and Sharon Jacobs shared their expertise in practicing mindfulness techniques, enabling all present to sit in the quiet. We walked the labyrinth, drew our Faith Trees and practiced a number of meditation journeys.
At the beginning of the day one candle was struggling, a bit like some of us, yet by the end of the day both candles were flourishing -a great reflection on the state of all the attendees.
